The Three Components of Good Health

Health is a condition where illness and physical infirmity are absence. Different definitions have been employed for different purposes over the years. It is essential to maintain health for oneself and ones’ family.

The three main aspects of good health are: physical, mental and spiritual. Healthy physical environments should be clean, safe and free of dust, insects and visible germs. The need for cleanliness arises from the fact that the body has to function effectively to maintain its physical functions. In a filthy and unhygienic environment the body is not able to function as it should and can even cause sickness. A physically healthy person tends to be less prone to sickness and physical problems.

Mental health is maintained by regulating one’s emotions and keeping a positive attitude towards life. Healthy people tend to be happier and more optimistic. Emotions are a key factor that affects health, so good management of one’s emotions is necessary in managing disease. A happy emotional state is conducive to a healthy lifestyle. A person who is always in a cheerful mood faces his problems with more ease.

The third aspect of good health is mental health. A person with good mental health is better able to handle stress and cope with daily challenges. The absence of stress increases the overall well-being. Mental illness is more prevalent in poor environments and places where social contact and interaction are minimal. However, the situation has become more favorable in urban areas as more people are coming into cities and towns and are exposed to more environmental hazards and stress.

Managing disease is an essential part of good health management. In the past, people suffering from mental illnesses were shunned and had low self-esteem. This is not the case anymore; people with mental disorders are now gaining popularity and it is perceived easier to treat them. The advent of medication such as medication for depression and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has made the public more aware of these mental disorders and the need to treat them. As well, more people are becoming more aware of the need to manage their physical bodies as well, to reduce chances of developing any physical disease.

The best way to develop a healthy lifestyle is through exercise and regular physical activities. Studies have shown that people with an active and healthy lifestyle are less likely to develop any physical ailments, which includes heart diseases, diabetes, and obesity. In addition, absence of diseases also means absence of diseases’ impacts on other aspects of the body like digestion, skin, and hair. A healthy diet leads to a healthy body and absence of diet-related diseases like constipation, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal problems. Excess fat in the body is harmful and can lead to lack of energy, weight gain, and depression among many other physical and mental conditions.
