Sports are organized physical activities, competitions and exercises. These fill the need for physical competition, recreation and play. They are a number of organized competitions around the world. This is the main difference between leisure, recreation or sports.

In recent years, many people have come to understand that there are many benefits from playing sport. Sports can be played by individuals, teams and associations. Many of the governing bodies for these organized sports have recognized the health benefits provided by sport. These associations provide resources and help to develop new ways for sport to enhance the physical activity. They also provide funds for research into sport and to support the development of new games and ways of playing the same sport. Many government bodies and local athletic commissions sponsor these governing bodies.

There are many benefits from playing sport, and some of these benefits are mental. Playing sport has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Professional sports leagues also sponsor several sport events that allow amateurs and professionals to participate.
